Antivirus – Which Freaking One

Do you have THE antivirus? There are many. So how do you know which one to pick for your computer?

In this post, we’ll look at some basic antivirus information to help with your decision and let you know how PST can help with all things antivirus related.

Antivirus Options

With so many antivirus options how do you know which one to pick and which one or ones to stay away from?

The basic idea of an antivirus program is to minimize the impact of a virus on your device before it wreaks havoc on it and possibly stop it if it is an older one and your antivirus program and its “definitions” are up to date. Definitions are the daily updates pushed out by the antivirus companies as they learn about more viruses and what to have the program look for on the computer (like antibodies for humans). With the majority of “real” antivirus programs doing this basic thing, how do you pick out one from the rest and then feel comfortable with the one you picked?

If you ask 25 IT people which antivirus they like or that you should use you could get almost 25 different answers. However, there are several that consistently rank near the top of annual “Best Antivirus for 20xx”. If you pick one of these you will likely be in good shape but remember, no antivirus will ever be 100% in stopping damage to data or your device because of a virus.

Malwarebytes

Bitdefender

TotalAV

Avast

Norton

Aura

Again, don’t get too caught up in the choice itself. Look at things like:

Pricing (how many years do you get for the price?)

How many devices can you install the antivirus program on?

Does it cover phones too?

Windows & Mac?

Does it include other features you need, such as VPN, password manager, etc?

Before you purchase an antivirus, be sure to check your devices to see if you already have one that is still within an active subscription. If you do still have one, it may be best to wait until that subscription is near it’s end (be sure to turn off any auto-renewal setting if you are going to change) in order to change to a new one. If you are not happy with the existing one, then change whenever you’d like.

We can help you with the decision and help with the installation.
