IT Security in your Office – Cybersecurity – Don’t have a clue? We do

Cybersecurity can be a daunting conversation to have and is often surrounded by dollar signs…and rightly so. But all hope is not lost. As a small business you do not have to try to compete with the big businesses that have $50k, $100k, or even millions of dollars to throw at cybersecurity annually. Don’t get me wrong, cybersecurity is not free, you will have to spend some money if you want to get even some of it right.

In this post, we’ll look at some basic principles for cybersecurity to help you decide how to move forward with it and let you know how PST can help with all things cybersecurity related.

Security

We can help you with small business cybersecurity to work within your budget (keep in mind this doesn’t mean just $25/month – you do need to spend money) to help you protect your network and data. But where do you begin?

First thing’s first. Let’s make sure the absolute basics are covered and that means the computers themselves.

  • Do you have a current antivirus on each computer?
  • Does anyone check the computers regularly to make sure the Windows or Mac updates are up to date?
  • Does anyone check the manufacturer (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) updates to make sure they are current?
  • Are the main software programs you use (Office, QuickBooks, Adobe, Foundation, FoxIt, OneDrive, DropBox, Dentrix, Patterson Dental, etc) current on their updates?
  • Does anyone check your data backup to make sure it is working properly and backing up when it is supposed to?

The next step is look at your networking equipment, which means your router, switches and wireless access points. Are these devices auto-updating? Is anyone checking on these devices to make sure they are staying up to date? Is anyone checking on the overall configuration settings to make sure they are current and updated when new threats come out and updates are recommended?

Another step is to look at your email. Do you have the right licenses to be able to add email security features to your email? Do you have the licenses you need to send encrypted emails when you are sending sensitive data via email?

Depending on other programs you use, whether or not you have a server in your office, etc there are other steps to take (what is your password policy?, onboarding and offboarding employees, etc) during the cybersecurity review and implementation process.
