Remote Workers – What do I need for them

The two main things remote workers need in addition to access to work resources and data are security while doing so and the internet access with which to do so regardless of where they are when trying to do their work.

In this post, we’ll look at some basic principles for remote workers to help you decide how to move forward with them and let you know how PST can help with all things office IT equipment related.

Security

One of the first things to think about on the security side is whether or not you will require your remote (at home or WFH) workers to have a company approved router at their house for the work connection. If you choose to require this, you will need to have an IT person set up the router (at least the initial configuration) to allow for that person to plug things in and the router get online. Keep in mind that this means adding to or possibly replacing their existing router. This can get tricky for non-IT people. If you have remote workers in the city or within reasonable driving distance for the IT person it
would be best to send them to the remote worker’s house to perform the setup and test
everything.

The benefit of requiring this company approved router is that your IT gets to set the settings which includes separating the remote worker’s home and work networks, adding a guest network and maybe even a kids network all separate so nothing anyone does on the home side causes issues for the remote work connection. The downside for the company is the expense of the router, setup and having to get it back if the remote worker is no longer working for/with the company. It’s not wrong to let the remote worker use their own router and in either case, the IT should review the remote worker’s computer (especially if it is their own personal computer) before letting them connect.
Do they have a current antivirus? Are the Windows or Mac updates current? These are important questions before letting the remote access take place.

Internet

Internet access is required for remote work access, so the company and the remote worker need to discuss what internet access the remote worker has.

Do they have enough speed for the work they will be doing?

  • If not, can what they have be upgraded to a faster speed?
  • If not, they may need to switch internet companies or the company and the worker can discuss who will pay for the 2nd internet connection specifically for the work connection.

Is a backup internet connection a good idea and a reasonable cost?

Unless the remote worker lives away from a city the internet connection tends not to be an issue these days.

We can help you with this situation and help with the installation of a new router or company owned computer if needed.
