VoIP Phone Systems – Get the POTS out of here
How old is your phone system? Does anyone still work there from the time it was installed? Can anyone access the brains of the system? Is it time for a new one?
In this post, we’ll look at some basic principles of VoIP phones systems to help you decide how to move forward with it and let you know how PST can help with all things cybersecurity related.
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over IP which means the phone call happens using the internet rather than the POTS we’ve known for so long. POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service and refers to the old school phones that used rotary dial, then the ones that we had on the wall with the really long cord. You know, the ones we could slam down when we would hang up on someone in anger. Lol.
Prerequisites
So, if VoIP uses the internet what do I need to have before I get a VoIP phone system so I know it will work? Good question. The very first thing you need to have is a reliable, steady internet connection. Speed is of some important and we will get to that in a moment but even a very fast internet connection that isn’t steady and of good quality won’t make for a good foundation for your VoIP phone system.
Imagine trying to drive a race car nearly 200mph down a street with small speedbumps on it. The speed bumps are small, but they definitely make an impact on the quality of the drive trying to get to 200mph. You may get going to a somewhat fast speed, but no one is going to like the drive. Fast but choppy internet is not good for much. Even web browsing would be frustrating and so much more a phone call on a VoIP system.
Good quality internet in your office depends on several things. First, the cabling. If the cabling in your building is very old (say 20+ years) you may want to have it replaced if you are going to be there for a good while. The best routers and switches in the world can’t make up for bad cabling. Second, you need a good router and good switches. If you are a business you should get business-class routers, switches and wireless access points for your office. Third, get the best internet you can afford available at your office’s address. Going cheap on your internet will likely bite you in the end and since you aren’t saving much it’s just not a good idea. Don’t lose a dollar trying to save a penny.
